Jason Hawkes has specialised in aerial photography since 1990, flying thousands of hours around the world.
His clients have included publishers, for whom he has produced more than twenty-five books of aerial views for Random House, Harper Collins and Orion. Subjects include, in Europe: London, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Britain and Provence, and in the USA: South Carolina and Washington DC. Hawkes' advertising and design work has been for for brands such as Nike, Rolex, Nat West, Hewlett Packard, Royal Air Force and BP.
Jason shoots from a whole variety of helicopters from the small 2 seater Robinson R22, through aircraft like the R44, Jet Ranger through to twinjet engined Squirrels (A Star) and larger machines such as the Dauphins, Augustas and Sikorskys.
His advertising shots have taken him to many locations around the globe from heights of a mere 100ft sitting on the skids of a helicopter up to 20,000 with full oxygen and have won awards from the Association of Photographers and D&AD.
With Jason's extensive knowledge of aerial photography, every detail of the shoot is taken care of. Booking the helicopters and pilot, gaining any flight permissions needed, location finding, searching and booking outlanding sites, model casting, etc.
In 2003 Jason was asked to write and illustrate a new book by the photographic publisher Rotovision on aerial photography. In the book, entitled " Aerial" which has a portfolio of over 100 of Jason's images he talks of the challenges of his work, the history and of aerial photography and the use of the image as a sociological document.
